  • Shirley Jones
  • Kathy Bottern
  • Erica Webb

The Arts Lounge will be celebrating the art of today and yesterday when three artists exhibit in July and August.

Featured artist Shirley Jones has been creating art for seven decades. Shirley started out studying Commercial Art at RMIT after leaving the Airforce following WW2 and she continues to paint at the age of 91. Shirley has been part of the Wyreena family from the beginning as part of the group who fought the “wrecker’s hammer” for the preservation of Wyreena in 1978. Two of her artworks depicting the nuns at Wyreena are part of the Maroondah City Council Art Collection and can be seen on the wall in Wyreena’s foyer. These artworks bring much discussion and interest from visitors to the centre.

Exhibiting alongside Shirley are Kathy Bottern and Erica Webb who are both exploring the idea of breathing space. Kathy’s mixed media work explores a moment in time, where all the challenges that the world throws at you are suddenly silenced. “They are islands in time, where you can just be in the moment, immersed in colour, shape and mark making.” Erica's works in acrylic explore women’s faces juxtaposed with different objects. “I’m playing with the idea of what it is to see and be seen, and how taking time to pause and just be present can open up opportunities for being that are otherwise missed.”

Take some time out in The Arts Lounge to enjoy and contemplate this interesting and thought provoking exhibition.
